                    Mille Lacs Reservation Wetland
                       Inventory and Delineation

This report was developed to provide information on the types,
locations, amounts, and scope of wetlands within the Mille Lac
Reservation. The overall goal is to provide a basis for the protection
and preservation of all wetlands within the jurisdiction of the Band
Government. It will also be the initial document used to developing
and establishing water quality standards for these wetlands. With the
Band taking over Section 404 jurisdiction upon the completion of these
standards and regulator development.

The Mille Lacs Band's Department of Natural Resources and
Environment received a grant from United States Environmental
Protection Agency in the fall of 1990 to conduct a wetlands inventory
and delineation on all lands within the Mille Lac Reservation and lands
under the jurisdiction of the Band Government. To conduct the
inventory and the delineation the Department used United States Fish
and Wildlife Service's National Wetlands Inventory Maps". The
identification of the acreage was done by using the following
procedure:

     a. Method was developed and used by the U.S. Fish and
         Wildlife Service-St. Paul Regional office.

     b. A dot grid method was used on National Wetlands
         Inventory Maps, scale (1:24,000).

     c. Dot grid represented .9 acres, dot grid specs=600=1/10
         acre or 440.044 acres.

The fundmental definition used to identify wetlands was:

Those areas that are inundated or saturated by surface or
groundwater at a frequency and duration sufficient to support,
and that under normal circumstances do support a prevalence
of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil
conditions. Wetlands generally include swamps, marshes,
     bogs, and similar areas.

This report consists of the following information:

     a. Summary of the wetlands

     b. A map of the area inventory.

     c. A summary by township of the types, acreage, and percentages of
         the various wetland inventoried.

     d. A listing by name of the wetland types.

     e. A listing by township and section of the types and amounts of
wetlands within each section. (note this data is listed by the
number of dots count per section per wetland, the acreage would
be determined by multipling by .9.)

Summary:

A summary of the data relating to this inventory includes the Mille
Lac Reservation which contains 61,068 acres of land located within the
following townships: North Kathio, South Kathio, South Harbor, and
Isle Harbor. Within the Reservation 22, 716 acres of wetlands were
identified. There are three major categories, Palustrine (77.1%),
Lacustrine (22.5%), Riverine (.4%) These wetlands were further
described into 89 different types. The five major types are:

     a. L20WH (Lacustine Littoral Open Water Permanent)
comprises 19.3 percent of the wetlands with the Reservation

     b. FO1B (Palustine Forested Broad-Leaved Deciduous Saturated)
comprises 7.8 percent of the wetlands with the Resevation.

     c. EM5B (Palustine Emergent Narrow-Leaved Persistant Saturated)
comprises 7.5 percent of the wetlands with the Resevation.

     d. SSB (Palustine Scrub Shrub Saturated) comprises 6.4 percent of
         the wetlands with the Resevation.

     e. SSI/EM5B1 (Palustine Scrub Shrub Broad - Leaved Deciduous
         Emergent Narrow-Leaved Persistant Saturated)
comprises 6.1 percent of the wetlands with the Resevation.
